Same Game Different Name: Double Dragon II
Many of us have played the original Double Dragon II for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It has classic solid beat'em up style controls/combos and we all remember the frustratingly challenging jumping sections. The music soundtrack was something of legend and pumped you up to play it again and knee more thugs in the face.
What some of you may not be aware of, is that there is a PC Engine CD version of Double Dragon II. It is more along the lines of the arcade versions of Double Dragon with some added anime cut scenes as you progress through the game and complete a level. That is one of the things that I enjoyed most about playing the PC Engine version for the first time. Seeing how Billy(Bimmy) and Jimmy get from place to place adds to the excitement, but that's about the only excitement that I would feel while playing this version.
Back in the 16 bit era, the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis were dominating the market with solid game franchises and creative marketing techniques. The TurboGrafx16 existed and was known by virtually all gamers, but barely anyone I knew had one. Regardless of the fact that a majority of the games I wanted were being released on the "Big 2", I still wanted a TG16 for one reason and one reason only...Splatterhouse!
