... Oh man, I don't want to do this. [What are you pratting around at? Don't puss out on me, this article's late as it is. - The Editor] It's just I'm bound to offend someone this week with Arcade Alley. We're talking about bad games. [So? Just do what you always do when this subject comes up- rant about Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball for ten minutes and call it a day.] Ooh, I hate that game so fucking much! But not this time- it's bad arcade games, you see... [Oh, get over yourself and get on with it. We've got quotas to meet.] ... Well, let's go, I guess.

Come on, you gutless punks, it's time for Arcade Alley, and the scrolling brawlers are back in town. A genre with a million names (beat-em-ups, belt scroll action, Angry Man Simulators), it was also a genre that found itself over-exposed in the 90s. Along with shoot-em-ups and one-on-one fighters, it's one of the most abundant genres in the arcade world, and so we have one representative of each year from 1991 to 1995 going under the knife today. These were the glory years for the genre, so there's some excellent stuff to cover. Let's go!

Are you ready, Harrier? It's time for Arcade Alley, and this time we're speeding off into the distance at max velocity- we're looking at some chase-view flying games. You all know what I'm talking about here- your view is behind your character (whether it's an F-14 Tomcat or a flying car) and you're flying into the screen. While this is a doddle with 3D graphics nowadays, back in the late 80s/early 90s developers had to get creative when rendering such things in 2D, usually relying on heavy-duty hardware and a lot of sprite scaling. This is a particular genre that, in the late 80s at least, Sega had quite the stranglehold over, but a few other developers had their own attempts... Let's go!

Are you a bad enough dude? I certainly hope you are, because it is time- as always- for Arcade Alley, and this week, things are bad. I mean that in the 90s sense of the word, 'cause we're having another look at the output of a company near and dear to my heart, Data East. Last time we covered a fair spread of Data East games, but you have no idea how many games they put out- they were pretty prolific, way back when! So, I guess we'll have to look a few more. Let's go!

Here we are, then- the second episode of this two-episode week, and for those with a sharp mind, these games should surely appeal. It's all about puzzle games! I've always liked this kind of game for some reason- from Tetris on the Game Boy, to Mean Bean Machine on the Mega Drive, and a spot of the crazy Kurushi on the PS1, it's a genre I've always had an affinity for, and the arcade doesn't disappoint in this area, as there's plenty of them. They're usually of the competitive type, though... But that's just up my street too. Let's go!
